How far we've come

I have been thinking about another compilation for a while now - but the traditional CD way just seems a little antiquated. (Not to mention that I have a habit of losing my own compilations :P)

So I set out to compile playlists on YouTube and posting a custom player here, so we'll have music and videos - neat huh? The tough bit is finding reasonably good versions of the songs I want from the various iterations of fan-made stuff out there. As a general rule, I try to pick the original videos, but sometimes the audio levels vary so widely that I'll probably blow somebody's ears out. Or in.

Well, here it is, some nice tunes to work or chill to. Just press play to find out How far we've come:

A little commentary on the songs:

1. Ladies and gentlemen by Saliva
A good number to start anything off. First heard on the PS3 ad played ad nauseum on TV. Pretty cool, so I didn't mind at all! Here's the ad:

2. How far we've come by Matchbox Twenty
Off their latest album "Exile on Mainstream", nice fast-paced tune summing up, pretty much, everything. :) My favourite song to listen to while driving and the namesake of this compilation. The video included in the compile is slightly modified by a fan but it retains the flavour of the original. The sound levels of the original video on YouTube are too low for this compilation unfortunately, you can watch it here though:

3. Face down by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Say no to violence, especially if the chick is as hot as the one in the video.

4. Are you gonna be my girl? by Jet
Old song but fun fan-made video to watch. The compiled version above is just an excerpt of the full song but you get the drift. Was used for an old iPod ad (someone at Apple has an ear for pop):

5. What I've done by Linkin' Park
The hook in the first few opening bars got me ... um, hooked. Also selected based on the theme of this compilation, if you dig that kind of thing ;)

6. Rock star by Nickelback
This song is played pretty much everyday on US radio. Nice sing-a-long tune though and pretty much a sign of the times; cool video too.

7. Home by Daughtry
Had the most trouble getting a good copy of this song. The original is licensed and can't be embedded. So I've basically picked one that sounded the best. Go on, nothing to see here unless you like botak men with designer goatees.

8. Soul meets body by Death Cab for Cutie
First heard when I was working the graveyard shift at Kohl's. And it stuck. Sounds a little New Order-ish.

9. True faith by New Order
The oldest song in this compilation that never sounds old. You gotta watch the video - lol.

10. First of May by Jonathan Coulton
Ok, this last gem is strictly NSFW. Nevertheless, funny nice song from JoCo, talented musician/geek who releases his music online only.
